Homestar Matataki
Twinkling stars for your home
Matataki is the first Sega Homestar Planetarium which lets the stars twinkle softly while projecting an authentic heaven view into your room. This creates a 3D image effect while projecting the stars at the same time. Matataki has built-in speakers with natural sounds from the sea and the mountains. Enjoy a perfect and romantic vision of the night sky. Fall asleep under twinkling stars with the timer on. While following the original Sega Homestar Planet design the Matataki has its own fresh appearance.

Technology to Dream
Since the product launch of the Sega Toys Homestar Original in 2006 it has established itself as a leading brand. The Homestar Series was developed by the Japanese inventor & entrepreneur Takayuki Ohira. As a recognized specialist for professional planetariums he has received numerous innovation prizes. His company Megastar supplies large planetariums internationally. Large planetariums project up to 22 million stars. Ohira has been driving the development of the Sega Homestar series in the joint development efforts of both companies. The result is home planetariums which project thousands of stars also at home at a very fair price.

Why stars twinkle
While out star gazing these at times will appear to be twinkling. Movements of the atmospheres air (turbulence) slightly deflect the light beam on its way to the stargazer's eye. It then looks as if stars were twinkling or flickering.
While twinkling can be perceived as romantic, astronomers and scientists actually aim to get an undistorted, untainted view of the celestial objects. Installing ground telescopes in a high location reduces distortions (twinkling). But only space telescopes really solve the problem. These are placed outside the earth’s atmosphere at around 500+km. Webb & Hubble are well known examples of space telescopes but actually more than 70 have been placed in space since 1970 by NASA and ESA alone. 26 of these remain active today.
How Matataki twinkles
Twinkling is made possible by adding a second disc, the effect plate, under a special star disc. Next you turn on the diurnal* motion (rotation) function. After starting the projection your eyes and mind will relax and focus. After a short time, you will see the realistic twinkling effect as if you are watching the stars in the universe from planet earth. This effect gives the projection more depth (3D).
*Diurnal motion is the daily motion of stars and other celestial bodies across the sky.
